Fafnir Penannular

Fafnir Penannular Fafnir Penannular (detail)

In the 19th Century, at Goldsborough, Yorkshire, a hoard of silver was found that had been buried since the 10th Century. Most of it was Arabic coins (most of the silver in Viking times came from the Middle East as trade coins) and scrap, but there were a few broken pieces of jewellery.

Among them was half a brooch in an Irish-Viking style, with Norse monster heads on a flaring Celtic profile. The curve was so perfect that I could reconstruct the shape as it appeared a thousand years ago: 45mm.
