Birka Cross

Birka Cross in Bronze

The Birka Cross is one of the most famous pieces from the gravesites of the Swedish island of Birka, once a prosperous Norse trading centre. Dating from the beginning of the 10th Century, it is one of the first tangible signs of the conversion of the Viking nations.

My version of it is roughly twice as large as the delicate original, more boldly modeled in simple filigree, but reproducing the naif interpretation of the Christian image by a craftsman who was, one suspects, more familiar with the depiction of Odin in such a pose. Pendant, 45mm.
