Odin's Penannular

Odin's Penannular

In the 19th Century, at Goldsborough, Yorkshire, a hoard of silver was found that had been buried since the 10th Century. Most of it was Arabic coins (most of the silver in Viking times came from the Middle East as trade coins) and scrap, but there were a few broken pieces of jewellery.

Among them was a penannular in an Irish-Viking style, with a flaring Celtic profile filled in with bossed discs and stylised birds and animal heads, perhaps representing Odin’s wolves and ravens. The original is dominated by the bossed discs: I have scaled them down to leave more room for the animal forms, and (authentically) turned them into gemstone mounts. Set with garnets, green agates or black onyx. 53mm.
